Technology in French Class
We are 21st century teachers and our students are 21st century learners. With that in mind, the French department strives to incorporate modern technology in all aspects of our curriculum. Thanks to the Cam Newton Foundation, we have a class set of 30 iPads that are shared between the two French classrooms. These have been an incredible resource to us, and we use them on an almost daily basis in our classes. The following is a sample of some of the technology-based projects we have done recently.
Website Design Project
When our 7th graders learned the French foods, they had to build websites for an imaginary restaurant, Café Marseille, a restaurant themed around France's second largest city. Their website had to include three pages: The HOME page had to have a description of their restaurant (atmosphere, décor, style of food, etc.). The MENU page had to be an attractive menu of all the foods we'd learned (and any others they wanted to add to that list). The LOCATION page had to describe the area where their restaurant was located (any city in the French-speaking world). The students had a great time designing their sites, and this served as a good project for students to practice using their vocabulary, and to learn the basics of web design. Speed Dating Skit
Students were given the assignment of creating a short skit of two people speed dating. They were to use the majority of the vocabulary learned throughout the year to have the two characters introducing themselves and getting to know each other. Students then created a video of their skit using the iPad app EduCreations. Student had a lot of fun getting creative with their characters. This was a great activity, because (content-wise) it was very similar to the format students will see on their EOC, but this activity used all that information in a fun way, so it was much more enjoyable than simply writing an EOC practice paragraph. |
QR Codes
We have used QR codes in multiple ways. We have used them to create scavenger hunts. Students scan the code with an iPad, and a Google Form appears with the question. When the form is submitted, it tells the students where to go next.
We have also experimented with embedding audio in the QR code. Most recently, this has given us the opportunity to showcase what students have learned by making posters of students with a QR code that plays a recording student work.

Fake Tweets
When learning Daily Routine vocabulary, students pretended to be "those annoying twitter friends," the ones who tweet about every little thing thing they're doing all day long.
We used a website that creates fake, realistic looking tweets. This was a really fun way for the kids to practice their vocabulary phrases in a way that's relevant to them.

Fake Text Message Screen Shots

Online Portfolios Using Kidblog
Our 8th grade students have been storing information learned on an online portfolio. This provides a great resource to them when they do French work at home.
